Sore Throat

Sore Throat Treatment at The Village Pharmacy

A sore throat is one of the most common reasons people seek advice from their pharmacy, and it can range from a mild scratchy feeling to pain severe enough to make swallowing difficult. Most sore throats are caused by minor infections that clear up on their own within a week, but persistent or severe symptoms sometimes need a closer look. At The Village Pharmacy, we understand how uncomfortable a sore throat can be, whether it is keeping you up at night or making it hard to eat and drink normally.

Through the NHS Pharmacy First service, our trained pharmacists can assess, diagnose and treat sore throats directly on the high street, without the need for a GP appointment in most cases.

What is a Sore Throat?

A sore throat refers to pain, scratchiness or irritation in the throat that often gets worse when swallowing or talking. It is usually a sign that the tissue at the back of the throat, including the tonsils, has become inflamed, most commonly as a result of an infection.

Sore throats are typically grouped by their likely cause. Pharyngitis refers to inflammation of the throat itself, while tonsillitis specifically involves inflammation and swelling of the tonsils. Both can produce similar symptoms and are often managed in the same way.

Viral sore throats

The majority of sore throats are caused by viruses, often the same viruses responsible for colds and flu. These usually resolve on their own within three to seven days without needing antibiotics.

Bacterial sore throats

A smaller proportion of sore throats are caused by bacteria, most commonly a type of streptococcus. These can sometimes require antibiotic treatment, particularly when certain symptoms suggest a bacterial cause is more likely.

What Causes a Sore Throat?

Sore throats develop for a range of reasons, and identifying the likely cause helps guide the right treatment. Common causes include:

  • Viral infections, such as the common cold, flu or glandular fever
  • Bacterial infections, including streptococcal throat infections
  • Tonsillitis, where the tonsils themselves become infected and inflamed
  • Irritants such as smoke, dry air or pollution
  • Excessive shouting, singing or straining the voice
  • Acid reflux, which can irritate the throat over time

Because so many causes overlap in how they present, a pharmacist assessment can help work out whether your symptoms are more likely to need supportive care alone or additional treatment.

Symptoms of a Sore Throat

Sore throat symptoms can vary depending on the underlying cause, but commonly include:

  • Pain or a scratchy feeling in the throat, often worse when swallowing
  • Redness and swelling at the back of the throat or on the tonsils
  • Swollen glands in the neck
  • A hoarse or croaky voice
  • A mild fever, headache or general feeling of being unwell
  • White patches or pus visible on the tonsils in some cases

If you experience severe difficulty breathing or swallowing, drooling that you cannot control, or swelling that is affecting your ability to open your mouth, please seek urgent medical attention, as these can indicate a more serious complication.

Treatment Through Pharmacy First

The Village Pharmacy offers the NHS Pharmacy First service, which allows our qualified pharmacists to assess and treat sore throats without the need for a GP referral in most cases. This means you can often be seen and treated on the same day, helping you feel better more quickly and avoiding an unnecessary wait.

During your consultation, our pharmacist will ask about your symptoms and how long they have lasted, and will examine your throat to help assess the likely cause. A recognised scoring system is often used to help judge how likely a bacterial infection is. Where appropriate, treatment through the service may involve:

  • Advice and treatment to ease symptoms, such as throat lozenges, sprays or pain relief, for straightforward viral cases
  • A short course of antibiotics, where your symptoms and examination suggest a bacterial infection that would benefit from this
  • Guidance on staying hydrated and resting your voice while your throat recovers
  • Advice on when to seek further assessment if symptoms do not follow the expected pattern of recovery

If your symptoms are more severe, persistent, or suggest a complication such as a peritonsillar abscess, we will refer you promptly to your GP or another appropriate service for further assessment.

Easing a Sore Throat at Home

Alongside any treatment we provide, there is plenty you can do at home to feel more comfortable while your throat recovers. Warm drinks, gargling with warm salt water, and sucking on throat lozenges can all help soothe irritation. Staying well hydrated, resting your voice, and using paracetamol or ibuprofen as needed for pain relief can also make a real difference in the early days.

If you have a sore throat that is not improving, or you are concerned about your symptoms, get in touch with us today or book an appointment online and we will guide you through the next steps.

Frequently Asked Questions

How can I tell if my sore throat needs antibiotics?

It is not always possible to tell just by how a sore throat feels, as viral and bacterial infections can produce similar symptoms. Our pharmacist uses a combination of your symptoms, how long they have lasted, and an examination of your throat to judge how likely a bacterial cause is, which helps decide whether antibiotics are appropriate.

Why do some sore throats come with swollen glands?

Swollen glands in the neck are a sign that your immune system is actively responding to an infection. The lymph nodes in this area can become enlarged and tender as they work to fight off whatever virus or bacteria is causing your sore throat, and they usually settle down as the infection clears.

Can a sore throat be a sign of something other than infection?

Yes. While infection is the most common cause, ongoing irritation from smoking, dry air, shouting, or acid reflux can also cause a sore throat without any infection being present. If your sore throat persists for several weeks without a clear infective cause, it is worth having it assessed further.

Is it normal for a sore throat to affect just one side?

A sore throat that is worse on one side, particularly alongside significant swelling, severe pain, or difficulty opening your mouth fully, can occasionally suggest a more serious complication such as an abscess forming near the tonsil. This would need prompt assessment rather than routine self care.

How long should I expect a sore throat to last?

Most viral sore throats improve within three to seven days without any specific treatment. If a bacterial infection is identified and treated with antibiotics, symptoms typically start to improve within a couple of days of starting the course. Symptoms lasting longer than this are worth having reviewed.
